Kapa3 and Doctorhomie: Joining Forces to Support Cancer Patients

Kapa3 is pleased to announce the signing of a memorandum of cooperation with the digital home-care platform Doctorhomie. The Kapa3–Doctorhomie collaboration aims to strengthen support for cancer patients and their families across Greece.

Since its establishment, the Cancer Guidance Center – Kapa3 has been actively working to provide meaningful guidance to people living with cancer and their caregivers, with a strong focus on access to benefits and services, information about patients’ rights, and psychosocial support. Through Mobile Units, digital tools and educational initiatives, the organization promotes patient-centred care, creates channels of communication with beneficiaries and strengthens their participation in decisions concerning their health. Kapa3’s philosophy is grounded in building partnerships, leveraging technology and fostering collaborations with organizations that share the same vision.

Doctorhomie, on the other hand, is redefining home-based care in Greece by offering an integrated digital platform that connects patients with physicians, nurses, psychologists, physiotherapists and caregivers. Through tools that enhance monitoring and management of care at home, Doctorhomie contributes to strengthening Primary Health Care, promoting prevention, supporting families and improving both the safety and quality of care.

The new collaboration between Kapa3 and Doctorhomie opens opportunities for joint initiatives at multiple levels, including:

  • the organization of workshops, conferences and webinars aimed at informing patients, promoting quality of care and strengthening trust between patients and their treating physicians, particularly within the context of home-based care and Primary Health Care,

  • awareness and information campaigns focusing on prevention, the fight against myths and stigma, and a better understanding of patients’ symptoms and needs,

  • participation and collaboration in national and European programmes that promote innovation in oncology care and strengthen digital tools for patients and caregivers,

  • joint research initiatives on topics of shared interest, with the aim of supporting scientific evidence, disseminating knowledge and contributing to health policy development at both national and European level.

This partnership is founded on the shared belief that patient care begins with information and support, is strengthened through education and collaboration, and evolves through the combined use of technology and patient-centred practices.

Kapa3 and Doctorhomie are committed to making the most of this collaboration in order to strengthen patients’ participation in decisions regarding their health, reduce inequalities and provide timely and effective support to those who need it.

With a shared vision of quality and accessible care, Kapa3 and Doctorhomie are opening a new chapter of cooperation in support of cancer patients in Greece.

Kapa3 Collaboration with the Municipality of Meteora to Establish a Cancer Patient Support Office

Kapa3 launches collaboration with the Municipality of Meteora to establish a support office for cancer patients and their families, strengthening local social services and providing practical assistance to patients and families affected by cancer.

The initiative for this establishment was taken by the Municipality of Meteora and approved by the Municipal Council, aiming to improve access to services and information for patients. The office will operate within the Kalampaka Community Center and will be staffed by a social worker and a psychologist, in collaboration with the “Help at Home” program.

The Cancer Guidance Center – Kapa3 will provide scientific guidance and prepare the tools and methodologies for the office’s operation, including collecting social histories, recording requests, and guiding patients and their families.

This office, as a support office for cancer patients, will offer free services such as:

  • Guidance on rights and benefits (KEPA, social tariffs, work schedule adjustments, allowances).

  • Patient file management to reduce bureaucratic burden.

  • Social and psychosocial support for patients and families.

  • Collaboration with local social and health services.

In addition, the support office will act as an information hub for the local community, providing interested individuals with information on prevention, awareness programs, and solidarity initiatives. In this way, it enhances not only the direct support for patients but also the wider community’s awareness and engagement with the needs of their fellow citizens.

In a statement, Mayor Lefteris Avramopoulos emphasizes:

“The establishment of the Patient Service Office for Neoplastic Diseases is a policy choice focused on people. The Municipality of Meteora takes responsibility to stand truly beside our fellow citizens, ensuring support, dignity, and effective access to their rights.”

The goal of the collaboration is to ensure timely and equitable access for cancer patients and their caregivers to reliable information and supportive services, reducing the stress and psychosocial burden often accompanying the disease.

Kapa3, with experience in patient guidance across Greece and an already functioning similar structure in the Municipality of Megara, continues to expand its network of collaborations with local authorities, strengthening the connection between social services and patients.

The collaboration with the Municipality of Meteora represents another step toward creating a stable framework for supporting cancer patients at a regional level, focusing on people and their real needs.

Cancer: From Prevention to Life Coordination – Successful Knowledge Seminar in Megara with Kapa3

With great success and participation from citizens of all ages, the Knowledge Seminar in Megara – From Prevention to Life Coordination took place on Sunday, February 8, in the Council Chamber of the Megara City Hall, in celebration of World Cancer Day.

The event was organized by the Municipality of Megara in collaboration with the Kapa3 Cancer Guidance Center, which since 2020 provides guidance and support to oncology patients and their families, ensuring access to vital information and services.

The seminar opened with a speech by the Mayor of Megara, Panagiotis Margetis, who shared his family’s personal experience with cancer, emphasizing the importance of accurate information and support throughout the patient journey. Stamatis Georgakis, Deputy Mayor for Public Health and Social Protection, coordinated the seminar and highlighted the value of Kapa3 and its Guidance Station in informing, supporting, and advocating for patients’ rights.

Distinguished experts participated in the seminar, presenting key aspects of holistic cancer care:

  • Georgios Nintos, MD MSc, Oncologist: Prevention and early diagnosis, causes, and preventive measures.

  • Katerina Papakonstantinou, MD MSc PhD, Obstetrician-Gynecologist: Gynecologic cancer, importance of HPV vaccination and Pap test.

  • Andrea Paola Rochas, Assistant Professor of Biology, University of Peloponnese Nursing Department: Nutrition and cancer prevention, emphasizing the Mediterranean diet, exercise, and avoidance of processed foods.

  • Maria Lavdaniti, Professor and Head of Nursing Department, International University: Role of oncology nurses in holistic care.

  • Pinelopi Vlotinou, Assistant Professor of Occupational Therapy, University of West Attica: Daily living support and quality-of-life improvement through occupational therapy.

  • Ioanna Sideri, Psychologist MSc, PhD(c), University of Peloponnese: Psychological support for patients and caregivers, resilience, and crisis management.

  • Grigoria Zacharogianni, MD MSc PhD, Radiation Oncologist: Modern treatment options and importance of moderate exercise during therapy.

The presentation of Kapa3 was delivered by Evangelia Bista, Co-founder and Head of Strategic Partnerships, highlighting the importance of digital literacy and a holistic approach to patient care. Kapa3 has expanded its oncology support network by inaugurating the Cancer Guidance Station in Megara, with the significant support of Megara Resins. In its first year, the station has assisted over 100 beneficiaries, offering guidance on social rights, patient file management, and psychological support, free of charge.

For 2026, Kapa3 is strengthening its digital services with Myrto, Greece’s first AI-powered Health Digital Assistant, providing personalized guidance and voice control. Planned initiatives also include: Wellness in Motion, with 12 outdoor walks for mental wellbeing of young adult cancer patients, the Cancer Wellness Open House Day, and a conference on equitable access to care.

The Knowledge Seminar in Megara – From Prevention to Life Coordination highlighted the importance of prevention, holistic care, interdisciplinary collaboration, digital literacy, psychological support, and continuous patient rights education.

World Cancer Day: United by Our Uniqueness

Every year on 4 February, World Cancer Day invites us to reflect on one of the greatest challenges of modern public health.

The goal is not only to confront cancer as a disease, but to face it with knowledge, empathy and shared responsibility. Because cancer touches millions of lives in countless ways, yet it does not define who we are. We are more than a diagnosis, more than a number.

World Cancer Day was established in 2000, following the World Summit Against Cancer for the New Millennium in Paris. It is a core element of the Paris Charter Against Cancer — a global commitment to advancing research, prevention, patient care, awareness and international mobilisation. Since then, the day has served as a reminder that addressing cancer requires long-term vision, cooperation and consistency.

This year’s message, “United by Unique”, highlights a fundamental truth: cancer is not only a medical event.

It is a deeply personal experience. Behind every diagnosis lies a unique human story — stories of fear and loss, but also of resilience, care, love and healing. Every story counts.

Cancer Today: Facts and Challenges

Cancer remains one of the most significant public health challenges in Europe and in Greece. Data from international and European organisations underline not only the scale of the disease, but also the persistent inequalities in prevention, early detection and access to care.

In Europe, approximately 2.7 million new cancer diagnoses are recorded each year, with around 1.3 million deaths, while the economic burden exceeds €93 billion annually. In Greece, cancer is the second leading cause of death, affecting thousands of families and carrying profound social and psychological consequences.

Progress, Prevention and Hope

At the same time, scientific progress offers well-founded reasons for optimism.

Prevention and early detection remain decisive factors. Screening programmes, vaccination, healthy lifestyle choices and access to reliable information can significantly reduce the risk of certain cancers and improve treatment outcomes. In this context, knowledge is not merely information — it is power and a fundamental right.

Advances in cancer management are equally important. Personalised medicine, targeted therapies, immunotherapy and improved management of treatment side effects contribute not only to increased survival rates, but also to a better quality of life for people living with and beyond cancer. Information and education are key tools for both prevention and empowerment.

Mental health plays a crucial role as well. Diagnosis and treatment are often accompanied by anxiety, fear, sadness and emotional exhaustion — affecting not only patients, but also their caregivers. Psychosocial support, counselling services and empowerment groups are essential components of holistic cancer care, helping to preserve dignity and quality of life.

2025 – Moving Forward with Vision

The Kapa3 Annual Review 2025 reflects a year of determination and vision, as Kapa3 strengthened its impact through initiatives and collaborations focused on holistic cancer care.During the first half of the year alone, we managed more than 400 individual requests, with support for the process of Disability Certification standing out as a key service—confirming that personalized, hands-on support remains at the core of our mission.

A milestone moment in 2025 was Kapa3’s participation, alongside 13 European partners, in the EU4Health programme MELODIC, which focuses on improving mental health support for young adult cancer patients (18–39 years old). Through research mapping the training needs of healthcare professionals, the project highlights the urgent need for better detection and management of psychological distress among young patients—many of whom still lack access to adequate psychosocial care.

MELODIC promotes innovative wellbeing interventions, such as physical activity in green and blue spaces combined with psychosocial support, emphasizing the healing power of nature and community in mental health recovery. As an active partner, Kapa3 works to ensure that these actions reach patients directly, fostering community engagement and equitable access to quality care.

At the same time, our participation in the second cycle of the SmartHEALTH programme, supported by CERTH, strengthened the digital integration of healthcare services and empowered patients through smart technologies, improving efficiency, accessibility, and transparency.

Our collaboration with FairLife within the BREATH programme for lung cancer patients highlighted the importance of holistic and interdisciplinary care. In parallel, our presence at conferences and scientific events—such as COST Action INECSC CA21125 and the 7th conference “Caregivers and Depression”—consistently brought attention to the needs of caregivers and the empowerment of patients.

At both national and international levels, Kapa3 presented its work at the Lazord International Conference, the Pan-Macedonian Scientific Nursing Conference, and the ESMO World Congress in Berlin. We also participated in major events such as the Patients Summit, Morning Health Talks by EIT Health, and the 18th Panhellenic Conference on Nutrition & Dietetics.

A particularly important moment was our action in the Municipality of Megara, where a new Cancer Patient Guidance and Counselling Station was established, offering direct and personalized support to patients and their families.

Prevention and awareness remain fundamental pillars of our work. Breast self-examination initiatives, participation in the Action4Obesity network, presence at the Thessaloniki Disability Festival, and the launch of new nutrition-related sections on our website all contribute to improving the quality of life of patients and caregivers—combining scientific guidance with lived experience.

Awards 2025

In 2025, Kapa3 received significant recognition for the digital platform Cancer Care Connect, winning a Gold Award at the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Awards, as well as the Gold Award for “NGO of the Year – Health and Social Care at the Hellenic Responsible Business Awards 2025.
In addition, our collaboration with the University of Peloponnese received a Silver Award at the Healthcare Business Awards 2025 for the programme “Community co-design and implementation of holistic educational practices for nutrition and mental health.”

Every initiative, every partnership, and every participation brings us closer to our vision: holistic, human-centred care where the voices of patients and caregivers truly matter.

Press Release for the Awareness Event titled “Information, Awareness, and Social Support. No One Alone!”

On Wednesday, October 18, from 10:00 to 19:00, Activities and Workshops were held at the Multi-Purpose Hall of Syntagma Metro Station, aiming to provide information and social support to oncology patients, caregivers, and their families.

The Cancer Center Kapa3, the Department of Marketing and Communication of the Athens University of Economics and Business, the General Laiko Hospital of Athens, STASY, WinCancer, and the Research Laboratory “Care of Adult Patients with Cancer” of the Nursing Department of the International Hellenic University, under the auspices of the Municipality of Athens, ELLOK, the Greek Patients’ Union, and HESMO, joined forces under the campaign “Think of a word that starts with K,”(*) with the goal of raising awareness about best practices in cancer prevention and patient management across healthcare units throughout the country.

The daily and strong presence of all the above organizations on the front line of addressing the disease, in hospitals across Greece, was transferred to the very heart of Athens, in an event with a clear and singular purpose: the advocacy of privileged social rights for oncology patients, as well as raising awareness around best practices for prevention and patient care.

During the opening of the event, WinCancer Manager Ms. Krystallidou referred to the ongoing struggle of organizations and non-profit entities for the prevention and fight against cancer. She emphasized that collaborations such as the one organized by Kapa3 are exactly the kind of synergies WinCancer seeks to support—an effort both demanding and relieving—guided by Kapa3’s core message: “No One Alone.”

Subsequently, Ms. Michalopoulou, Vice President of ELLOK, which placed the event under its auspices, spoke about the central goal of ELLOK and all cancer-focused organizations: prevention. Early detection, she stressed, is what empowers patients and positively influences the course of the disease, while she also highlighted the importance and value of digital health literacy in today’s world.

On behalf of the Department of Marketing and Communication of the Athens University of Economics and Business, Professor and Head of the Department Mr. Intounas welcomed the event, expressing his sincere thanks and congratulations to all students who voluntarily supported the action, as well as to Kapa3 for taking the initiative. He also referred to a new short educational program developed by the department in collaboration with Kapa3, titled “Marketing and Civil Society.”

The inspiration behind the letter “K,” as shared by Mr. Gravaris, Head of Public Relations and Communication of the Greek Patients’ Union, was the word “wine.” In his address, he compared wine—associated with health and quality of life—to initiatives such as the present one, which aim to restore health, safeguard well-being, and support the continuation of life for cancer patients. The Greek Patients’ Union embraced the initiative from its inception and placed it under its auspices.

The presence of Mr. Michail Nikolaou, Vice President of the Board of HESMO, was also significant, as was his statement during the greeting that cancer is not invincible. He emphasized, however, that prevention must be addressed far more seriously if we are to suppress the disease. “Prevention is not only about quitting smoking; it is also about loving and taking care of oneself,” Mr. Nikolaou concluded, noting that Kapa3 will be a key ally in this effort.

Ms. Bouki, Director of Corporate Communication & Passenger Experience of STASY, representing its President Mr. Damaskos, spoke about the importance of organizing events like this one, which bring people “closer,” strengthen support for patients, and empower their journey toward regaining health. STASY emphasized its ongoing commitment to standing by people and supporting their needs, making “CLOSE” its chosen word for the day.

Finally, Ms. Theoni Zougkou, Head of the Nursing Services Directorate of General Laiko Hospital, praised Kapa3’s efforts in the fight against cancer and spoke about the hospital’s collaboration with the organization. She thanked the nurses and the psychologist who were present to inform the public about cancer prevention and management, and highlighted their significant work in providing healthcare services to oncology patients at General Laiko Hospital.

Closing the greetings, Ms. Evangelia Bista, Head of Development and Operations of Kapa3, deeply moved by the presence and support of so many key health organizations, warmly thanked all attendees for supporting Kapa3’s mission. She also expressed heartfelt thanks to all volunteers who embraced the idea and helped make the event a reality. “Kapa3 was created to cover the crucial area of social support and guidance for oncology patients along the difficult path of illness,” Ms. Bista emphasized, committing to even more actions so that no one feels—or is—alone in the fight against cancer and in favor of life.

Throughout the day, many attendees received information on registering for digital prescriptions and scheduling preventive health appointments. At the same time, visitors were informed about the adoption of Kapa3’s digital applications—innovative and unique tools in Greece. This initiative was supported by volunteers from the Department of Marketing and Communication of the Athens University of Economics and Business, who enthusiastically provided guidance and assistance.

Participants who attended the two workshops were also given the opportunity to schedule a free digital mammogram or breast ultrasound through the Biomedicine Group, an event supporter, under the message #TakeControl #TakeCareOfYourself. Every woman should have her first mammogram at the age of 40 and then annually thereafter. For women with confirmed BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutations, annual digital mammography is recommended from the age of 30.

At the same time, staff from General Laiko Hospital provided guidance on self-care for oncology patients and distributed informative leaflets on the subject.

The all-day activities also included the distribution of informational material on breast cancer prevention by the Research Laboratory “Care of Adult Patients with Cancer” of the International Hellenic University, as well as additional educational materials from reputable scientific organizations, available on Kapa3’s website under the ODYGIA K3 section.

Workshops titled “Giving Meaning to Cancer – A Psychological Perspective” by psychologist-psychotherapist Vasileia Mari of General Laiko Hospital, and “Breast Cancer Prevention” by nurse (MSc) Eirini Throuvala from the Gynecological Cancer Unit of Elena Venizelou Maternity Hospital, offered valuable information and guidance to patients, caregivers, and family members through interactive and accessible discussions.

All activities were supported in Greek Sign Language by “HANDS UP,” emphasizing the importance of accessibility for all patients and caregivers to information that concerns them and supports effective care.

“Good Morning,” “Kindness,” “Close,” “Duty,” “New,” “Guide,” “Condemn,” “Reassure,” and “Summer” prevailed over “Cancer” and “Malignancy” in an event full of meaning, positive emotions, and hope.

No one is alone in the fight for life—and Kapa3, together with all the organizations and groups that supported this event, powerfully demonstrated the true meaning of that message.
