Kapa3 Collaboration with the Municipality of Meteora to Establish a Cancer Patient Support Office

Kapa3 launches collaboration with the Municipality of Meteora to establish a support office for cancer patients and their families, strengthening local social services and providing practical assistance to patients and families affected by cancer.

The initiative for this establishment was taken by the Municipality of Meteora and approved by the Municipal Council, aiming to improve access to services and information for patients. The office will operate within the Kalampaka Community Center and will be staffed by a social worker and a psychologist, in collaboration with the “Help at Home” program.

The Cancer Guidance Center – Kapa3 will provide scientific guidance and prepare the tools and methodologies for the office’s operation, including collecting social histories, recording requests, and guiding patients and their families.

This office, as a support office for cancer patients, will offer free services such as:

  • Guidance on rights and benefits (KEPA, social tariffs, work schedule adjustments, allowances).

  • Patient file management to reduce bureaucratic burden.

  • Social and psychosocial support for patients and families.

  • Collaboration with local social and health services.

In addition, the support office will act as an information hub for the local community, providing interested individuals with information on prevention, awareness programs, and solidarity initiatives. In this way, it enhances not only the direct support for patients but also the wider community’s awareness and engagement with the needs of their fellow citizens.

In a statement, Mayor Lefteris Avramopoulos emphasizes:

“The establishment of the Patient Service Office for Neoplastic Diseases is a policy choice focused on people. The Municipality of Meteora takes responsibility to stand truly beside our fellow citizens, ensuring support, dignity, and effective access to their rights.”

The goal of the collaboration is to ensure timely and equitable access for cancer patients and their caregivers to reliable information and supportive services, reducing the stress and psychosocial burden often accompanying the disease.

Kapa3, with experience in patient guidance across Greece and an already functioning similar structure in the Municipality of Megara, continues to expand its network of collaborations with local authorities, strengthening the connection between social services and patients.

The collaboration with the Municipality of Meteora represents another step toward creating a stable framework for supporting cancer patients at a regional level, focusing on people and their real needs.

The “Myrto” Health Navigator : A New Era of Digital Support for Oncology Patients

The “Myrto” Health Navigator brings digital and AI-powered care closer to oncology patients, supporting personalization and equitable access to services.

On the occasion of the recent initiatives implemented by Kapa3 in the context of World Cancer Day, our organization once again highlighted the importance of access, empowerment, and meaningful support for oncology patients. Through awareness actions and public engagement, we reaffirmed our commitment to strengthening patients’ voices and improving their everyday reality.

Throughout its journey, Kapa3 has consistently demonstrated its dedication to supporting oncology patients by bridging gaps in information, accessibility, and social care. Building on this experience, we are now taking the next step forward.

After five years of continuous presence in empowering oncology patients through digital guidance, Kapa3 is expanding its footprint in the field of social accessibility by creating an innovative digital assistant: “Myrto.”
“Myrto” addresses the phenomenon of second-level digital exclusion, transforming digital information into a human, accessible, and meaningful experience. It represents the first Social Artificial Intelligence application in the field of social welfare for oncology patients in Greece.

It goes beyond providing information: it converses, guides, and evolves according to users’ real needs, with an emphasis on both accessibility and psychosocial support.

Our aim is to develop a fully functional chatbot integrated into the Kapa3 website, to train social workers and healthcare professionals in its use, and to substantially reduce the digital divide for vulnerable groups.

“Myrto” will offer holistic and personalized guidance to oncology patients as a true Patient Empowerment e-Navigator, through two main pillars:

  • Patient Advocate: Support with legal and administrative procedures (benefits, patient rights), facilitation of access to social welfare services, and guidance within the local healthcare system.

  • Health Navigator: Provision of essential information for health self-management.

At the same time, the platform will enhance communication, highlight available community resources, and incorporate an innovative health literacy assessment tool, enabling full personalization of the services provided.

The project will be developed, tested, and validated by oncology patients as well as by social workers, legal and financial experts, and consultants in health communication and psychology, both in person and online across Greece.

Your participation could substantially contribute to co-creating a personalized Navigator for every oncology patient, as a multidisciplinary perspective is a key factor in the project’s success.

Upon completion, we expect significant social, health, and scientific impact: improved patient quality of life, strengthened self-management, reduced resource requirements, and the creation of a network of experts and informed patients and professionals.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities — 3 December

A day of awareness, commitment, and action

The International Disability Day, also known as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (3 December), established by the United Nations in 1992, serves as an annual reminder of the need for full inclusion, equality, and respect for the rights of persons with disabilities across all aspects of social life. Moreover, today, more than ever, promoting accessibility and inclusion is not optional — it is an obligation.

According to the World Health Organization (2024), approximately 1.3 billion people — 16% of the global population — live with some form of disability. Disability is part of human diversity, and the lived experience of it highlights the systemic inequalities that continue to exist in many countries, including Greece. As a result, the need for stronger inclusion policies becomes increasingly evident.

These global figures highlight why International Disability Day remains a vital call to action worldwide.

Challenges and inequalities in Greece

In Greece, persons with disabilities still face significant barriers in their daily lives: inadequate accessibility in public spaces and services, difficulties in mobility, limited access to employment, and persistent social stigma that deeply affects their quality of life. National data confirm that these inequalities have direct consequences on health, education, and participation in social and economic life.

At the same time, improving accessibility is not only about removing barriers — it is about shaping a society that recognizes the real needs of its people. Therefore, from training professionals and changing attitudes, to ensuring universal access to healthcare and psychosocial support, inclusion requires sustained commitment. Only then can we guarantee that every citizen has equal opportunities, dignity, and participation.

World AIDS Day — December 1

World AIDS Day is a powerful reminder that the fight against HIV/AIDS is far from over. Despite remarkable progress in recent decades, millions of people worldwide are still living with the virus. At the same time, inequalities in access to prevention, diagnosis and treatment continue to cost lives.

Established in 1988 as the first international health-related awareness day, World AIDS Day has since served as a global call for informed action, early diagnosis, destigmatization and equitable care.

What We Know Today About HIV/AIDS

According to recent UNAIDS data, more than 39 million people are living with HIV globally — and thanks to modern treatments, they can live full and healthy lives.

The science is encouraging. Antiretroviral therapy (ART/ARVs) allows people on treatment to reach undetectable viral loads, which means they cannot transmit the virus (“Undetectable = Untransmittable”).

Yet despite this progress, new infections still occur — mainly in communities facing social exclusion, economic hardship, or limited access to healthcare services. At the same time, lack of information and persistent stigma remain major barriers that delay testing and treatment.

HIV & Cancer: An Important Connection

The link between HIV and several forms of cancer isn’t widely known, yet it is significant:

  • People living with HIV have a higher risk of cervical cancer due to the more persistent presence of HPV.
  • Increased risk is also observed for non-Hodgkin lymphoma, Kaposi sarcoma and several cancers associated with chronic viral infections.
  • Early diagnosis, continuous treatment and regular screening significantly reduce these risks.

The Situation in Greece

Greece has made important progress in recent years, thanks to the operation of Checkpoints, the support of NGOs and prevention structures, the spread of PrEP, and improved access to treatment.

In 2024, Greece recorded a small decrease (4%) in new HIV diagnoses compared to 2023, according to the Hellenic National Public Health Organization (EODY). However, underdiagnosis remains a real concern. Many people avoid timely testing due to stigma and fear of discrimination.

Prevention: What Each of Us Can Do

  • Testing: a simple test can save lives.
  • Condom use & comprehensive sexual education.
  • PrEP & PEP: modern and effective prevention tools.
  • Eliminating stigma: information and open dialogue remain our strongest forms of protection.
  • Supporting facilities that provide access to prevention, diagnosis and treatment.
A Human Rights Issue

At Kapa3, we believe World AIDS Day concerns all of us. Access to healthcare is a fundamental right. No one should be afraid to get tested, speak openly or seek support.

According to International Human Rights Law, discrimination based on HIV status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, health status (including substance use), or sex work constitutes a violation of human rights.

World AIDS Day reminds us that knowledge, prevention and solidarity save lives — and that a world without new HIV infections is possible.

Giving Voice to People with Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC) in Greece

Promitheas launches MyPBCVoice, an innovative initiative aimed at empowering and supporting people with Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC) in Greece. PBC is a rare, chronic autoimmune liver disease with symptoms such as fatigue, itching, abdominal discomfort, and psychological challenges.

MyPBCVoice focuses on patient education, information, and mutual support to improve quality of life. Activities include:

  • Questionnaires to assess patient needs (fill here)

  • Interactive Facebook community for communication and support (join here)
  • Short videos and vidcasts with patients and experts
  • Online webinars
  • Digital archive of complaints and reports to map access barriers

October 17 – International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

October 17 has been established by the United Nations as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, a day dedicated to raising awareness and taking action against a phenomenon that continues to affect millions of people worldwide. The observance began in 1987, when thousands of citizens gathered in Paris to honor the victims of extreme poverty and advocate for a more just and equitable future for all.

Poverty is not only about lack of income—it affects access to education, healthcare, housing, employment, and mental well-being. For people living with serious or chronic illnesses, such as cancer, financial insecurity further complicates daily life, limiting access to treatments, medications, and supportive services.

According to the latest Hellenic Statistical Authority data (Income and Living Conditions Survey 2024), 26.9% of Greece’s population—approximately 2.74 million people—is at risk of poverty or social exclusion, an increase compared to the previous year. Greece ranks second in the EU after Bulgaria, highlighting the difficulty households face in coping with inflation, the energy crisis, and limited social protection.

Globally, according to the United Nations World Social Report 2025, over 690 million people live in extreme poverty (less than $2.15 per day), while 1.1 billion experience multidimensional poverty, lacking access to healthcare, education, and a decent standard of living. Social and economic crises, combined with climate change, disproportionately impact vulnerable households, increasing inequalities and reducing opportunities for stable recovery.

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty also emphasizes the role of communities and decision-makers in creating inclusive systems. Addressing social determinants of health, ensuring access to essential services, and empowering vulnerable groups are critical to reducing inequalities and improving quality of life. By working together—health professionals, social organizations, and civil society—we can create a world where those facing illness are not further burdened by poverty.

At Kapa3, we firmly believe that access to quality healthcare and decent living conditions are fundamental human rights. Poverty and health are interconnected—the one can easily amplify or worsen the other. Through awareness, empowerment, and social support initiatives, we strive to contribute to a society where no one is deprived of the care they deserve, regardless of income.

New Guide by the Greek Ombudsman on Serving Vulnerable Groups in Public Services

The Greek Ombudsman has released a new, comprehensive Guide addressing the service of vulnerable social groups by public authorities. This important tool for awareness and training aims to improve the quality of service, strengthen equality, and promote respect for the rights of all citizens.

The Guide includes:

  • The main legal framework and legislative provisions concerning different categories of citizens.
  • The difficulties and barriers faced by groups such as Roma communities, persons with disabilities, victims of domestic violence, people living with addictions, or citizens with a migrant background.
  • Practical behavioral guidelines for civil servants to ensure that services are accessible, non-discriminatory, and respectful of each group’s specific needs.
  • Tools and points of reference (such as helplines, support structures, and competent services) for the immediate guidance of citizens in need.

In this way, the Guide serves as a bridge between citizens and Public Administration, promoting transparency, equal treatment, and social cohesion.

Its significance lies not only in providing up-to-date information and an overview of the relevant legislation, but also in offering clear, practical directions for the daily work of public employees. This ensures that every citizen – regardless of origin, gender, age, or social status – enjoys equal access to quality services.

The Guide is available on the website of the Greek Ombudsman and is recommended for use by all public bodies, welfare organizations, hospitals, municipalities, and citizens’ associations.

KAPA3 supports and highlights such initiatives, which contribute to both citizens’ empowerment and the better preparation of the staff who serve them. Disseminating this Guide is another step toward a society free of exclusion.
