New Composition of the Working Group on the National Action Plan Against Cancer: What This Means for Patients and Their Families

In a particularly significant development for the public health sector, and more specifically regarding the management of cancer in our country, the Ministry of Health recently recently adopted the 1st Amendment to the Decision Establishing the Working Group for the preparation of the National Action Plan Against Cancer (Ref. No. A1b/G.P.oik.42035, September 16, 2026).

This decision is signed by the Minister of Health and marks the revitalization and substantial strengthening of the group, which undertakes the critical task of planning actions for the prevention, treatment, and support of cancer patients in Greece. The national action plan serves as our country’s “roadmap,” fully aligned with the European Plan to Combat Cancer (Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan) and the relevant Recommendations of the Council of the European Union. The key areas on which it focuses are strengthening primary prevention and pre-symptomatic screening, ensuring equitable access to innovative treatments and cutting-edge medications, as well as the digital transformation of through the IDYKA systems, with a view to improving patient monitoring, as well as ensuring the quality of life for people with cancer through oncology nursing and palliative care.

The new composition of the working group consists of 41 members, ensuring a highly scientific and perfectly balanced representation. The Secretary General of Public Health, Christina-Maria Kravvari, has been appointed as the group’s coordinator, while the position of Deputy Coordinator is held by the President of the Hellenic Cancer Federation (ELLOK), George Kapetanakis. At the same time, the Group includes representatives of the major scientific societies (EOPE, EAE, EEPA, EEAO),distinguished university professors, researchers, Regional Health Administrators, as well as officials from the Ministry of Health, EOPYY, IDYKA, and ODIPY.

ELLOK’s active participation in the Group’s leadership ensures that the real concerns and the “voice” of the patients themselves will be at the center of every institutional planning effort. For the patients, their families, and the caregivers supported by the Cancer Patient Guidance Center, this institutional development carries particularly positive implications. The collaboration of specialized scientists from different fields (medicine, nursing, environmental engineering, and digital technology) ensures a holistic approach to the disease. At the Cancer Patient Guidance Center Cancer Patient Guidance Center, we closely monitor the work of the Task Force and remain committed to providing continuous, accurate information and meaningful support to every patient at all stages of their journey.
