{"id":23219,"date":"2026-03-05T12:39:53","date_gmt":"2026-03-05T10:39:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kapa3.gr\/?p=23219"},"modified":"2026-03-05T13:09:25","modified_gmt":"2026-03-05T11:09:25","slug":"multiple-myeloma-awareness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kapa3.gr\/en\/multiple-myeloma-awareness\/","title":{"rendered":"March \u2013 Multiple Myeloma Awareness Month"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 data-start=\"148\" data-end=\"191\">March \u2013 Multiple Myeloma Awareness Month<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"193\" data-end=\"420\">March is internationally recognized as <strong data-start=\"232\" data-end=\"268\">Multiple Myeloma Awareness Month<\/strong>, a type of blood cancer that affects plasma cells \u2013 immune system cells responsible for producing antibodies and defending the body against infections.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"422\" data-end=\"648\">This period provides an important opportunity to raise public awareness, highlight the challenges faced by patients, and enhance understanding of the disease, early diagnosis, and the importance of access to modern treatments.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"650\" data-end=\"678\">What is Multiple Myeloma<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"680\" data-end=\"1035\">Multiple myeloma develops in the bone marrow, when plasma cells grow uncontrollably and produce abnormal proteins. The presence of these cells can affect the production of healthy blood cells, cause bone damage, and impair the function of vital organs such as the kidneys. Although relatively rare, it is the <strong data-start=\"989\" data-end=\"1034\">second most common blood cancer worldwide<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1037\" data-end=\"1385\">The disease\u2019s symptoms may be initially nonspecific and develop gradually. <strong data-start=\"1112\" data-end=\"1218\">Fatigue, bone pain \u2013 especially in the spine or ribs \u2013 frequent infections, anemia, or kidney problems<\/strong> are some of the signs that may prompt further investigation. Early awareness and timely medical evaluation are therefore crucial for diagnosis and disease management.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1387\" data-end=\"1422\">Multiple Myeloma by the Numbers<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1424\" data-end=\"1541\">Globally, the disease affects a significant number of people. According to international epidemiological data:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1543\" data-end=\"1780\">\n<li data-start=\"1543\" data-end=\"1600\">\n<p data-start=\"1545\" data-end=\"1600\"><strong data-start=\"1545\" data-end=\"1566\">188,000 new cases<\/strong> were reported worldwide in 2022<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1601\" data-end=\"1673\">\n<p data-start=\"1603\" data-end=\"1673\">Approximately <strong data-start=\"1617\" data-end=\"1640\">121,000 people died<\/strong> from the disease the same year<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1674\" data-end=\"1780\">\n<p data-start=\"1676\" data-end=\"1780\">It is estimated that <strong data-start=\"1697\" data-end=\"1768\">more than 540,000 people are currently living with multiple myeloma<\/strong> worldwide<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1782\" data-end=\"2082\">The disease occurs more often in older adults. Most diagnoses occur in people <strong data-start=\"1860\" data-end=\"1884\">over 60\u201365 years old<\/strong>, and around <strong data-start=\"1897\" data-end=\"1949\">80% of cases are reported in individuals over 65<\/strong>. Experts predict that the disease\u2019s incidence may rise in the coming decades, largely due to the aging population in many countries.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2084\" data-end=\"2111\">The Situation in Greece<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2113\" data-end=\"2291\">In Greece, the exact epidemiological picture of multiple myeloma is not fully clear, as there is <strong data-start=\"2210\" data-end=\"2255\">no comprehensive national cancer registry<\/strong> recording all cases systematically.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2293\" data-end=\"2360\">However, according to available international estimates for 2022:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2362\" data-end=\"2610\">\n<li data-start=\"2362\" data-end=\"2435\">\n<p data-start=\"2364\" data-end=\"2435\">About <strong data-start=\"2370\" data-end=\"2404\">763 new multiple myeloma cases<\/strong> were reported in the country<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2436\" data-end=\"2499\">\n<p data-start=\"2438\" data-end=\"2499\">Approximately <strong data-start=\"2452\" data-end=\"2466\">579 deaths<\/strong> were attributed to the disease<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2500\" data-end=\"2610\">\n<p data-start=\"2502\" data-end=\"2610\">It is estimated that around <strong data-start=\"2530\" data-end=\"2584\">2,154 people in Greece are living with the disease<\/strong> over a five-year period<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2612\" data-end=\"2748\">These figures highlight the importance of improving health data collection and continuously supporting patients living with the disease.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2750\" data-end=\"2776\">Advances in Treatments<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2778\" data-end=\"2872\">In recent years, scientific progress has significantly changed the course of the disease.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2874\" data-end=\"2922\">Modern therapies include:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2924\" data-end=\"3104\">\n<li data-start=\"2924\" data-end=\"2947\">\n<p data-start=\"2926\" data-end=\"2947\"><strong data-start=\"2926\" data-end=\"2945\">Immunotherapies<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2948\" data-end=\"2977\">\n<p data-start=\"2950\" data-end=\"2977\"><strong data-start=\"2950\" data-end=\"2975\">Monoclonal antibodies<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2978\" data-end=\"3007\">\n<p data-start=\"2980\" data-end=\"3007\"><strong data-start=\"2980\" data-end=\"3005\">Proteasome inhibitors<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3008\" data-end=\"3038\">\n<p data-start=\"3010\" data-end=\"3038\"><strong data-start=\"3010\" data-end=\"3036\">Immunomodulatory drugs<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3039\" data-end=\"3104\">\n<p data-start=\"3041\" data-end=\"3104\"><strong data-start=\"3041\" data-end=\"3065\">CAR\u2011T cell therapies<\/strong> (for advanced stages of the disease)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"3106\" data-end=\"3267\">New therapeutic combinations and ongoing clinical studies are providing more treatment options, reinforcing hope for even more effective therapies in the future.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"3269\" data-end=\"3312\">The Importance of Awareness and Support<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3314\" data-end=\"3601\">Despite these advancements, public awareness and support for people living with the disease remain crucial. <strong data-start=\"3427\" data-end=\"3524\">Early diagnosis, access to specialized medical care, and equitable access to modern therapies<\/strong> are key factors in improving disease outcomes and patients\u2019 quality of life.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3603\" data-end=\"3897\">Multiple Myeloma Awareness Month serves as a reminder that <strong data-start=\"3662\" data-end=\"3730\">knowledge, research, and collective effort can make a difference<\/strong>.
