The day highlights the importance of access to education, information, and social participation for blind and partially sighted individuals. World Braille Day was officially recognized by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/development\/desa\/en\/news\/social\/world-braille-day-2018.html\"><strong>UN General Assembly in 2018<\/strong><\/a> and has been observed since 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The date was chosen to coincide with the <strong>birth of Louis Braille<\/strong> (4 January 1809). Despite losing his sight at a young age, Braille developed a system of raised dots representing letters, numbers, and symbols, revolutionizing education and communication for blind people worldwide.<\/p>\n<h6><strong>Why this day matters<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>World Braille Day is not just a commemorative event\u2014it reminds us of the <strong>importance of equal access to knowledge, education, and basic rights<\/strong> for people with visual impairment. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/development\/desa\/en\/news\/social\/world-braille-day-2018.html\">According to the UN<\/a>, Braille is essential for the <strong>full realization of human rights<\/strong> for blind individuals, enabling independence, access to information, and social participation.<\/p>\n<p>Globally, approximately <strong>39 million people are blind<\/strong> and <strong>253 million have moderate to severe visual impairment<\/strong>. In the EU, over 2.5 million citizens live with significant vision problems, while in Greece, more than 35,000 people face severe visual impairments. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/ht\/desa\/first-ever-world-braille-day-underscores-importance-written-language-human-rights\">Access to educational materials in Braille<\/a> is crucial for their integration and independence.<\/p>\n<p>World Braille Day serves as a global <strong>call for awareness<\/strong>, encouraging societies, organizations, and policymakers to promote equality, education, and <strong>information accessibility<\/strong> for all.<\/p>\n<h6><strong>Rights and accessibility in Greece<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>In Greece, the rights of people with disabilities, including those with visual impairment, are supported by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/amea.gov.gr\/legislation\"><strong>National disability legislation<\/strong><\/a>, covering equality, non-discrimination, education, access to services and information, and digital\/physical accessibility<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/access.uoa.gr\/en\/legislation\/\"><strong>EU accessibility directives<\/strong><\/a>, ensuring websites and public sector apps are accessible for everyone<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euroblind.org\/convention\/article-30\/greece\"><strong>Copyright law exceptions<\/strong><\/a> for blind people, allowing accessible formats such as Braille or audio<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/accessible-eu-centre.ec.europa.eu\/national-accessibility-authority-greece_en\"><strong>National Accessibility Authority<\/strong><\/a>, monitoring and proposing policies for full accessibility<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Despite these frameworks, practical implementation\u2014especially in digital spaces\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/nchr.gr\/images\/pdf\/apofaseis\/ellinikes_ektheseis_en_ell_org\/OHE\/GNCHR_Shadow_Report_on_the_Rights_of_Persons_with_Disabilities_CRPD.pdf\">remains a work in progress<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h6><strong>Digital and modern accessibility<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>Technology has created new opportunities beyond printed materials:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Accessible_Books_Consortium\">Digital Braille services<\/a> and accessible formats are increasingly available<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/access.uoa.gr\/en\/legislation\/\">Legal requirements<\/a> for <strong>web and app accessibility<\/strong> in Greece and the EU ensure that digital content is usable for people with disabilities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>World Braille Day reminds us that <strong>access to knowledge and communication is a fundamental human right<\/strong>.
