At the same time, inequalities in access to prevention, diagnosis and treatment continue to cost lives.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Established in 1988<\/strong> as <strong>the first international health-related awareness day<\/strong>, World AIDS Day has since served as a global call for informed action, early diagnosis, destigmatization and equitable care.<\/p>\n<h6>What We Know Today About HIV\/AIDS<\/h6>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/thepath.unaids.org\/\">recent UNAIDS data<\/a>, more than 39 million people are living with HIV globally \u2014 and thanks to modern treatments, they can live full and healthy lives.<\/p>\n<p>The science is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiv.gov\/hiv-basics\/overview\/data-and-trends\/global-statistics\">encouraging<\/a>. Antiretroviral therapy (ART\/ARVs) allows people on treatment to reach <em>undetectable viral loads<\/em>, which means they cannot transmit the virus (\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiv.gov\/hiv-basics\/staying-in-hiv-care\/hiv-treatment\/viral-suppression\">Undetectable = Untransmittable<\/a>\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>Yet despite this progress, new infections still occur \u2014 mainly in communities facing social exclusion, economic hardship, or limited access to healthcare services. At the same time, lack of information and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unaids.org\/en\/resources\/documents\/2024\/07-hiv-human-rights-factsheet-stigma-discrmination\">persistent stigma<\/a> remain major barriers that delay testing and treatment.<\/p>\n<h6>HIV &amp; Cancer: An Important Connection<\/h6>\n<p>The link between HIV and several forms of cancer isn\u2019t widely known, yet it is significant:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>People living with HIV have a <strong>higher risk of cervical cancer<\/strong> due to the more persistent presence of HPV.<\/li>\n<li>Increased risk is also observed for <strong>non-Hodgkin lymphoma, Kaposi sarcoma<\/strong> and several cancers associated with chronic viral infections.<\/li>\n<li>Early <strong>diagnosis<\/strong>, continuous <strong>treatment<\/strong> and <strong>regular screening<\/strong> significantly reduce these risks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At <strong>Kapa3<\/strong>, we have published articles on the importance of screening and patient empowerment, which you can find here: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kapa3.gr\/en\/shining-the-light-on-medical-gaslighting-and-its-impact-on-patient-safety\/\">Article1<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kapa3.gr\/en\/what-to-know-about-the-hpv-vaccine-and-cancer-prevention\/\">Article2<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kapa3.gr\/en\/it-s-never-been-more-important-to-focus-on-cancer-prevention\/\">Article3<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kapa3.gr\/en\/17-11-cervical-cancer-elimination-day-of-action\/\">Article4<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kapa3.gr\/en\/artificial-intelligence-ai-is-transforming-the-fight-against-cancer-the-european-cancer-organisation-s-harnessing-ai-for-cancer-care-in-europe-report\/\">Article5<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h6>The Situation in Greece<\/h6>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unaids.org\/en\/regionscountries\/countries\/greece\">Greece<\/a> has made important progress in recent years, thanks to the operation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aidshealth.org\/global\/Greece\/\">Checkpoints<\/a>, the support of NGOs and prevention structures, the spread of PrEP, and improved access to treatment.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong>2024, Greece<\/strong> recorded <strong>a small decrease (4%)<\/strong> in new HIV diagnoses compared to 2023, according to the Hellenic National Public Health Organization (<a href=\"https:\/\/eody.gov.gr\/images\/nosimata\/metadotika\/Tmima_hiv_aids\/epidimiologiko-deltio-hiv-2024.pdf\">EODY<\/a>). However, underdiagnosis remains a real concern. Many people avoid timely testing due to stigma and fear of discrimination.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prevention: What Each of Us Can Do<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Testing<\/strong>: a simple test can save lives.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Condom use<\/strong> &amp; comprehensive sexual education.<\/li>\n<li><strong>PrEP &amp; PEP<\/strong>: modern and effective prevention tools.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Eliminating stigma<\/strong>: information and open dialogue remain our strongest forms of protection.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Supporting facilities<\/strong> that provide access to prevention, diagnosis and treatment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h6>A Human Rights Issue<\/h6>\n<p>At <strong>Kapa3<\/strong>, we believe <strong>World AIDS Day concerns all of us. Access to healthcare is a fundamental right.
